INSTRUCTIONS - START HERE

Friday, March 31, 2023, 1:00 PM - Sunday, March 31, 2024, 11:00 PM

Specialties - Rehabilitation
Professions - Occupational Therapist

This course is designed to help therapists understand the functions of the upper extremity and how the variability and complexities of these functions can be extremely challenging in treatment planning and execution for hemiplegic and hemiparetic patients.  This course challenges the therapist to recognize the patient as an individual with unique goals, motivations, and circumstances.  Treatment planning should involve evidence based practice but looking at the patient’s individual characteristics will be vital for patient engagement and buy in.

This course discusses the complexities of integrating evidence-based practice into the clinical model.  It discusses how the interaction of the health care system-based model impacts clinical decision making, along with patient centered care, EPB, and clinical judgement / experience.
This course provides current day updates on the most reputable and popular treatment models being used in neurological rehabilitation of the upper extremity including task specific treatment, functional electronic stimulation, mirror therapy, virtual reality, robotics, constraint induced therapy, NDT, and “standard clinical treatment.”

Objectives
After completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  1. • Identify common functions that people use their upper extremities for and investigate effective strategies for rebuilding these skills for clients who suffer stroke or brain injury resulting in hemiplegia.
  2. • Identify common functions that people use their upper extremities for and investigate effective strategies for rebuilding these skills for clients who suffer stroke or brain injury resulting in hemiplegia.
  3. • Identify the necessary ingredients needed in stroke treatment sessions that facilitate the best possible recovery.
  4. • Identify the necessary ingredients needed in stroke treatment sessions that facilitate the best possible recovery.
  5. • Develop a further understanding of the NDT approach to treatment implementation and identify treatment ideas that can promote the patient to relearn how to perform the following functions again: Forward reaching from low planes of movement to overhead, balance and support, transitional movements, carrying items bilaterally and unilaterally, carrying objects in gait, pushing and pulling various objects, dressing and performing other ADL functions.
  7. • Identify how evidence-based practice fits into the client centered model of practice and what the strengths and limitations of the current research are as described by experts and researchers in the field.
  8. • Identify how evidence-based practice fits into the client centered model of practice and what the strengths and limitations of the current research are as described by experts and researchers in the field.
  9. • Identify what influences clinical decision making. • Understand the model of functioning, disability and health. • Understand the four factors of decision making according to the modified Sackett model. (Health System & Service organization, relevant scientific evidence, clinical judgement and patient’s values/goals/preferences.
  10. • Identify what influences clinical decision making. • Understand the model of functioning, disability and health. • Understand the four factors of decision making according to the modified Sackett model. (Health System & Service organization, relevant scientific evidence, clinical judgement and patient’s values/goals/preferences.
  11. • Understand factors that both promote and limit clinicians from utilizing EPB in everyday practice.
  12. • Understand factors that both promote and limit clinicians from utilizing EPB in everyday practice.
  13. • Develop a better understanding on treatment intensity, repetition/mass practice and how it may or may not promote recovery of the UE.
  14. • Develop a better understanding on treatment intensity, repetition/mass practice and how it may or may not promote recovery of the UE.
  15. • Develop a better understanding of the following treatment approaches and the strengths and limitations of current research for following: Task Oriented Training, Constraint Induced Therapy, Trunk Restraint Therapy, Functional electrical stimulation, mirror therapy, virtual reality, robotics
  16. • Develop a better understanding of the following treatment approaches and the strengths and limitations of current research for following: Task Oriented Training, Constraint Induced Therapy, Trunk Restraint Therapy, Functional electrical stimulation, mirror therapy, virtual reality, robotics
