SLP-RehabEd-The Transtheoretical Model of Change and Motivational Interviewing: How to Help Patients (and Students) Help Themselves

Physical, occupational and speech therapists are well positioned to use motivational interviewing during their treatments due to the length of time spent and the strong therapeutic relationships that are created with patients. This course will discuss the transtheoretical model of change as well as motivational interviewing and how these can be applied to patients in the clinic setting and to students in clinical learning to elicit and strengthen an individual’s intrinsic commitment and desire to change. Participants will learn principles and strategies to engage in conversations with patients when they are ready to make a change in their life. Participants will reflect on their personal opinions and reactions as well to ensure they are meeting their patients where they are and creating a safe space for them to share their experiences. Current literature will be discussed, as there is a strong body of evidence throughout (and beyond) healthcare that demonstrates the efficacy of motivational interviewing in facilitating healthy change. 

1. 1. Describe the five stages of change for the transtheoretical model of change and utilize this information to identify a patient’s willingness to change a behavior.
2. 2. Understand and apply the components of motivational interviewing with patients to strengthen the therapeutic relationship and results in an empathetic, patient-centered manner.
3. 3. Consider the multiple factors involved in our patient’s rehabilitative journey and what role we can play in removing obstacles for enhanced success.
