Needs Assessment: 1. Introduction and Background a. Transthyretin amyloid cardiomyopathy (ATTR-CM) is an underdiagnosed and potentially fatal disease of the heart muscle. The disease involves deposition in the myocardium of misfolded transthyretin protein that normally circulates in the bloodstream; ultimately, this misshaping leads to disruption of cardiac function. Pharmacists can play a critical role in managing patients with ATTR, particularly in the areas of medication management and patient education. 2. Identification of the Need a. Epidemiology of ATTR i. According to the US Office of Rare Diseases (ORD), segment of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), amyloidosis is considered a rare or “orphan” disease. Given this classification, estimated impact is less than 200,000 of the US population b. Pharmacists’ Role in ATTR Management i. Pharmacists are key members of the healthcare team in managing ATTR and its complications, which include heart failure, arrhythmias, neuropathy, depression and gastrointestinal issues. ii. Pharmacists must assess tolerance of medications and suggest management if issues such as orthostatic hypotension present given incidence of autonomic dysregulation. iii. A growing body of evidence underscores the importance of pharmacists in identifying potential drug-drug interactions, monitoring for adverse effects, and educating patients about proper medication adherence. c. Educational Gaps i. Pharmacists have expressed a need for continued education on the latest guidelines and practices for ATTR management, specifically around: 1. Updated emerging pharmacological management. 2. Medication access concerns and means to improve such. 3. Target Audience a. Pharmacists of varying level of experience 4. Desired Outcomes a. The desired outcomes of this continuing education activity are: i. Improved pharmacist knowledge and skills related to ATTR pathophysiology, progression, and management. ii. Enhanced pharmacist competence in drug therapy selection and access to such therapies. 5. Evaluation of Effectiveness a. The effectiveness of this continuing education activity will be evaluated through completion of post-presentation feedback survey. 6. Conclusion a. The continuing education activity on ATTR is crucial for bridging the knowledge gaps identified among pharmacists. With increasing prevalence of ATTR, this educational initiative will help improve patient outcomes through enhanced knowledge and practical application of ATTR management strategies.

Objectives
After completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe pathophysiology and progression of transthyretin amyloidosis (ATTR)
  2. Identify common medications currently used to treat ATTR
  3. Describe additional emerging therapies on the horizon to treat ATTR
