This presentation will outline appropriate use of methadone for pain management. It will outline drug pharmacokinetics, indications for appropriate use, adverse effects, equianalgesic dosing, and proposed methods for dose titration.


Objectives
After completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Review pharmacokinetics of methadone including mechanism of action, duration of analgesia, half-life elimination, time to steady state, and metabolism
  2. Identify patients appropriate for therapy by understanding risks, benefits, contraindications, and required monitoring
  3. Outline dosing principles as they relate to a patient case
