Aducanumab and lecanemab will be discussed in relation to the treatment of mild Alzheimer's disease. A focus will include considerations for patients presenting with acute stroke as well as the clinical practice algorithm developed for use at OhioHealth.

Monoclonal antibodies are the latest advances in the management of mild Alzheimer’s disease. Aducanumab and lecanemab were FDA approved within the last year. Both target amyloid beta proteins in the brain, which have been suspected of playing a role in the initiation and pathologic process of Alzheimer’s disease. This lecture will focus on the clinical trial data, clinical application, significant adverse events particularly focusing on acute stroke patients, as well as the clinical algorithm to be utilized at OhioHealth.

Objectives
After completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Explain the proposed pathophysiology of Alzheimer’s disease
  2. Describe the mechanism of current and future anti-amyloid therapies in amyloid-beta associated Alzheimer's disease
  3. Summarize the changes to amyloid burden during treatment and its clinical impact
  4. Discuss the concerns of fibrinolytic therapy in patients on aducanemab and lecanemab
