The purpose of this course is to describe the impact of respiratory devices on a patient’s ability to participate in therapies in the acute care setting. A discussion of different oxygen therapies, advanced airways, and mechanical ventilation, and how to troubleshoot them during therapy sessions. Ventilator modes, waveforms, and weaning strategies for optimizing patient’s respiratory status. Discussion of current interdisciplinary research between respiratory, occupational, physical, and speech language therapies, including opportunities for future study. A short question and answer session to be held after the lecture.


Objectives
After completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  1. 1. Identify and discuss indications for oxygen therapy devices, CPAP/BiPAPs
  2. 2. Explain mechanical ventilation strategies, modes and waveforms
  3. 3. Discuss types of artificial airways
  4. 4. Mobilization strategies for patients experiencing respiratory failure
