THIS COURSE EXPIRES 12/31/24.  According to the American Cancer Society, for years people with cancer have been frustrated by the cloudy thinking they sometimes notice before, during, and after cancer treatment. This mental fog is commonly called chemo brain or Cancer Related Cognitive Impairment and its cause is not known. For some people, these changes come on fast and only last a short time. Others may have mild, long-term changes. In most cases, the changes are subtle, and others around the person with cancer may not notice at all. These changes can make people unable to go back to school, work, and social activities, or make it so that it takes a lot of mental effort to do so. CRCI affects everyday life for many people with cancer. Speech Therapy includes the treatment of CRCI, including word-finding and memory difficulties that often come as a result of cancer treatments.


Objectives
After completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Understand the functional cognitive deficits associated with cancer and cancer treatment.
  2. Gain knowledge of prevalence and management of CRCI.
  3. Describe the role of cognitive rehabilitation in CRCI.
  4. Integrate the information presented to describe an evaluation and treatment plan for a patient with CRCI.
  5. Identify potential long-term neuropsychological effects of cancer and resources for survivorship.
  6. Understand the functional cognitive deficits associated with cancer and cancer treatment.
