This one-day course will focus on non-pharmacological and evidence-based approaches for care of persons with dementia (PWD) across multiple disciplines, to include disease symptoms, behaviors, and care needs throughout disease progression. The risks and benefits of commonly prescribed medications, as well as alternative approaches to medication compliance and administration, will be discussed. A representative from Franklin County Guardianship Board will share information on the guardianship process. We will discuss management of behaviors and alternatives to risky medications. Hospice team members will speak to the complexity of hospice care with end stage dementia and other comorbidities. In addition, different levels of care will be described and defined.

  1. Assess the risks vs. benefits of offering commonly-prescribed medications for persons with dementia
  2. Discuss common types of dementia.
  3. Apply a variety of non-pharmacological approaches for common symptoms and behaviors of dementia
  4. Review risks of commonly-prescribed antipsychotics in PWD.

  6. Identify community resources/agencies that can assist with support for persons with dementia and their care partners
  7. Discuss various levels of care in the community.
