DH Interdisciplinary Session 1 Video

Given that academic medical centers provide care for a disproportionate proportion of underserved populations in the US, residents from all disciplines are learning about social determinants of health through the eyes of their patients every day. However, relatively few residency programs in the US provide formal educational curriculum despite the ACGME mandate requiring competency for health disparities training and favorable resident attitudes towards learning about the medically underserved. Studies have shown that both formal and informal curricula are needed to provide ample opportunities around social determinants of health learning in order to ultimately improve patient outcomes of our underserved population. This CME activity is designed to raise awareness around what drives population health outside of traditional medical care with aspirations to reconceptualize how residents think about healthcare delivery, increase confidence to screen appropriately, provide appropriate resources, and ultimately address proximal drivers of health outcomes.

1. Recognize the impact of nutrition on various conditions and long term health outcomes
2. Understand development, key updates, and intended utilization of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans DGAs 2025-2030
3. Approach nutrition conversations with dignity and a patient centered approach.
4. Identify and critically assess common food and diet myths and the impact of weight bias on health outcomes
5. Employ practices that support patient-focused nutrition education and collaboration with nutrition experts to support optimal health.
