Maternal morbidity and mortality continues to climb and many of the poor outcomes have been deemed to be preventable, in particularly in regards to postpartum hemorrhage. Identification is key for timely recognition and intervention. While we have implemented many strategies to better manage postpartum hemorrhage, opportunities have been identified for earlier recognition and ultimately utilizing a multidisciplinary approach to optimize management.


Objectives
After completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Appreciate current postpartum hemorrhage rates
  2. Understand OhioHealth's approach to identification of abnormal bleeding and postpartum hemorrhage
  3. Describe how Thromboelastograms (TEGs) can allow customized blood transfusions when significant hemorrhage does occur
  4. Understand the importance of early identification of Morbidly Adherent Placenta and how prenatal diagnosis allows for surgical optimization to minimize associated morbidity
