The intention of this presentation is to provide education and guidelines for speech therapists on how to manage dysphagia after cardiothoracic surgery. There will be a brief overview of cardiac anatomy and physiology followed by review of common cardiac surgeries, including pathophysiology, medical management, and typical recovery trajectory. Then, there will be a review of up-to-date literature regarding dysphagia in this population. Evidenced-based clinical guidance will be given for how to determine who is at risk for dysphagia as well as considerations for assessment and treatment.


Objectives
After completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  1. 1. The learner will demonstrate a general knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the heart, associated diseases, and common cardiothoracic surgeries.
  2. 2. The learner will be able to complete a chart review to identify risk factors for dysphagia after cardiothoracic surgery.
  3. 3. The learner will identify effective assessment and treatment strategies to implement for patients with dysphagia after cardiothoracic surgery.
