PT-RehabEd-An Orthotic Assessment for the Neurologic Client

This hour and a half course will provide participants with the knowledge necessary to properly assess the foot of a neurologic client in order to make the most appropriate orthotic recommendation. The course will review the anatomy of a normal foot, including the foot’s function in gait, as well as identify how to properly assess the foot for abnormalities or structural concerns. Through the use of lecture presentation, participants will identify considerations for orthotic devices including how an orthosis will impact the client’s short and long term goals, appropriate timing of obtaining an orthosis, as well as how a device will impact a client’s independence. Various designs and materials of both off the shelf and custom AFOs will be reviewed in order to understand how an orthotic can be designed to enhance appropriate movements and limit undesired movements. Shoe considerations will also be discussed in order to ensure that effective footwear is utilized in combination with a client’s orthosis.

1. 1. Understand assessment of the neurologic foot to determine primary impairments adversely affecting gait mechanics, efficiency, and balance.
2. 2. Recognize the impact spasticity has on functional gait; determine indications for referral for spasticity management.
3. 3. Identify key considerations and specific indications for recommending appropriate orthotic appliance.
4. 4. Identify various types of AFO’s and their impact on gait.
