The Second Opinion Clinic was developed to meet the needs of women with newly diagnosed breast cancer. A focus group was done with women who had gone through the OhioHealth system for their breast cancer care. Surveys were also sent out to women who did not participate in the focus group. Women identified the need to have a multi-specialty consultation before beginning their cancer treatment. A need for this type of venue was also identified to keep physicians that treat breast cancer current with the latest developments/treatments available by bringing all the specialists together in one venue for peer interaction. The multi-specialty team includes a rotating group of physicians: surgeons, plastic surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, pathologists, radiologists and fertility specialist. A genetic counselor and breast health nurse navigator are also present. A lead physician is selected for each patient based on the specific reason the patient is coming to the clinic. This physician meets with the patient prior to the panel meeting to do a history and physical and to determine the patient’s questions. The lead physician then presents the case to the entire team at which time pathology and imaging studies are reviewed. The entire team then meets with the patient. Once the team has met with the patient, they reconvene to develop a cohesive recommendation for treatment. This recommendation is given to the patient at the time of their visit. A letter outlining this recommendation is then sent to the patient and their referring physician.
