This course is targeted to educate physical therapists, occupational therapists, and speech therapists about an evidence-based approach to collaborative rehabilitation plan of care development for people with Huntington’s Disease. Due to the disease progression, the presentation will focus on the different stages of Huntington’s Disease and important plan of care considerations as the condition progresses. Contemporary research and literature reviewing the disease process itself, impairments caused by the disease, functional mobility interventions for people with Huntington’s disease, neuropsychiatric implications of Huntington’s disease, environmental considerations for people with Huntington’s disease, and speech/communication considerations for people with Huntington’s disease will be reviewed during the course. The emphasis on a holistic treatment approach with caregiver education will be provided as well. At the end of the course material, the participants will have the opportunity to apply the knowledge to a patient case study as well as be given time for a question-and-answer session.


Objectives
After completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  1. 1. Be able to identify the foundation for the disease process of HD.
  2. 2. Be able to make a comprehensive list of impairments that are likely to be observed when evaluating a patient with HD.
  3. 3. Accurately identify the stages of HD and what each stage means from a functional mobility standpoint in the treatment progression. .
  4. 4. Incorporate evidence-based functional mobility guidelines to increase patient independence, decrease fall risk, and improve quality of life.
  5. 5. Identify communication and mental health considerations in the plan of care for patients with HD. 6. Be able to apply plan of care considerations to a case study model to simulate critical thinking in a patient-care scenario
