Prediabetes Management

Understanding and application of the American Diabetes Association guidelines is key to the accurate and timely diagnosis of prediabetes. The series of cases presented in this continuing education activity will walk the provider through central guidelines to consider when diagnosing, treating and managing a patient with prediabetes. The continuing education activity will address prediabetes screening and diagnosis, prediabetes management, and outcomes in the adherent and non-adherent patient. The learning modules were designed to reflect cases that primary care providers including physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants encounter in a practice setting. This activity is provided in collaboration with the Diabetes Institute at Ohio University.

1. Recall prediabetes diagnostic criteria.
2. Describe how to communicate a diagnosis of prediabetes to the patient.
3. Recognize the types of resources that exist in the community to support a patient with prediabetes.
4. Develop a management plan including lifestyle change to support the patient with prediabetes.
5. Explain how to manage the adherent patient with prediabetes.
