Applying Trauma Informed Approaches in Pediatric Rehabilitation Practice

Approximately 70% of adults in the U.S reporting having experienced at least one traumatic event over the course of their life and nearly two-thirds of children report the same by the age of 16. There are both short and long-term responses to trauma that may disrupt both physical and mental health, reduce adaptive behaviors, functional cognition, and emotion regulation, and impact roles and routines. These responses may also affect participation and functioning across essential occupations such as sleep, eating, work, school, care of others, and hygiene. As pediatric therapy practitioners, having a core understanding of trauma and how it impacts those we serve is important to effective, compassionate care. This course will help learners understand basic concepts and principles of trauma and trauma-informed approaches that can be considered and applied in pediatric therapy practice settings.

1. Understand the guiding principles and concepts of trauma and trauma-informed approaches.
2. Recognize the needs of children and adolescents who have experienced trauma in relation to therapy.
3. Highlight the application of trauma-informed approaches across therapy practice settings.
4. Develop ways practitioners can integrate trauma-informed approaches in their practice.
